Fox Sports has had terrible coverage of the 2022 World Cup

The 2022 World Cup is now over, though the best thing about its conclusion is that we no longer have to sit through the awful coverage from Fox Sports.

There have been so many mistakes made by Fox during this World Cup that it is embarrassing. I get that it is an American channel, so the United States is the star of the show, but there was a clear disregard once the Yanks were knocked out. 

The mistakes made went through the final, which Fox stated was the fourth time a World Cup Final has been to extra time. That is just wrong. Fox showed a graphic with only the 1994, 2006, and 2014 World Cup Finals being listed. Little did they know there are four other World Cup Finals that went to extra time, including recently in 2010. 

Even beforehand, the Fox crew made easily avoidable mistakes. They mentioned that France had not trailed since going 1-0 down to Australia in the opening match. Somehow, they must have forgotten that France lost 1-0 to Tunisia.

Then there was the World Cup trophy presentation which Fox threw to the side so they could show some regular season NFL games. Pathetic if you ask me. One is the biggest sporting event every four years and the other is something we, unfortunately, get 18 weeks of. 

The mistake that really got to me was that numerous times the Fox coverage team said that England won the World Cup in 1962. That’s just wrong, it was 1966 when Bobby Moore lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy following England’s 4-2 triumph over West Germany. 

On top of all that, the numerous mistakes are so easily avoided if Fox just checked their facts. These were just the ones that I could remember; I cannot imagine what was said during the group stage which I was not in the U.S. for. It is even more impressive that the mistakes are made despite Fox spending $425 million on getting the rights to the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

It appeared that Alexi Lalas and Clint Dempsey lost interest in the World Cup as soon as the U.S. were thrashed 3-1 by the Netherlands. That was good for the listeners since they were terrible to begin with.

Ultimately, it is far more interesting listening to Telemundo even though I speak no Spanish.

On that note, a goal for myself is to learn Spanish before the 2026 World Cup so that I can watch the Telemundo coverage, not the Fox Sports coverage. I would also advise everyone else to do the same. If only ESPN had managed to keep the rights to the World Cup.
